Story

Story

A true Renaissance story makes Edouard Delaunay a Phoenix in Burgundy.

Founded in 1893, Edouard Delaunay is an old House with a rich and singular history that contributed significantly to the development of Burgundy throughout the 20th century. Unfortunately, the company had to be sold in 1992 much to the disappointment of Laurent, founder’s great-grandson who had recently joined his father in the business.

Determined to rebuild the estate, he created Badet-Clement in 1995 specialising in wines from the South of France, before returning to Burgundy in 2003 as a distributor.

Finally, in 2017 he was able to buy it back, with the aim of restoring its position among the great names of Burgundy.
Starting with the 2017 vintage, Maison Edouard Delaunay offers a selection of around thirty vintages concentrated on the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, ranging from regional appellations to Grands Crus.
Recognition followed suit being awarded IWC winemaker of the year in 2020 & 2021, a mere 3 years after its revival!

Precise, subtle, well-balanced wines, without excess, for the most demanding wine lovers and enthusiasts throughout the world.

PHILOSOPHY
And what if the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits were the future of Burgundy… A few kilometres to the west of the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits, with similar soil profiles, the vineyards of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits flourish… This is the seat of the Delaunay family, who settled at the Château de Charmont in l’Etang-Vergy in 1954. Here, the higher altitudes (100 to 150 m) of the vines could be a solution to climate change worth exploring with an offer of fresh, pure, elegant wines. Faithful to our history, we want to contribute to showcasing these terroirs of the future that further valorise our beautiful region of climats that is Burgundy, just as the monks of the Citeaux Abbey did in the Middle Ages.

Thanks to our unique network, we buy grapes of the finest quality from Burgundy’s top growers. As much as possible, we select those grown from vineyards that are managed in a sustainable and ecologically responsible manner, privileging organic viticulture. We work in conjunction with growers throughout the entire year, decide on the harvest date and we pick our grapes ourselves.

With pragmatism and without any pre-established formulas, we adapt our vinification and ageing processes to the potential of each terroir, plot, grape variety and vintage. We do not want our wines to be masked by oak, so we use it judiciously to give the wine just what it needs so that during the ageing process all of its potential and expression can shine through. Ageing a great wine requires patient, gentle work.

TERROIR
This cuvée is crafted with a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from the finest terroirs in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits: plots in “Les Dames Huguettes” (33%) overlooking Nuits-Saint-Georges, the slopes of Villars Fontaine (28%), which are at the same latitude as Vosne-Romanée, plots located on the hill of Vergy (22%) facing our Château de Charmont winery at an altitude of 450 m, and grapes from Magny-les-Villiers and Villiers-la-Faye (17%). The majority of these terroirs benefit from east-southeastern exposure at altitudes of 150 m above the Côte where the nights are cool throughout the ripening phase of the grapes, lending the wines all of their characteristic purity and freshness.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING
The grapes from each plot were vinified and aged separately. The grapes were completely destemmed, except for those (5%) from the plot on the hill of Vergy which were vinified using the entire bunches of grapes. Rapid vinification under controlled temperatures of no higher than 29°C allowed us to preserve the freshness that is characteristic of the Hautes- Côtes de Nuits wines. Ageing lasted 9 months with 30% carried out in new oak casks. At the end of ageing, the cuvées were selected and carefully blended to obtain the best balance representative of the entire area of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

TASTING NOTES
Gorgeous deep red colour. Intense nose bursting with scents of cherry and truffle are complemented by a touch of toasted bread, indicative of superb maturity. Impressive aromatic complexity with notes of spices: juniper berries, clove and cumin along with fruity notes of raspberry jelly, cooked cherry, and a hint of fig, as well as nuances of cigar, incense and bark. Starts of beautifully on the palate, round and fresh, rather full-bodied. The tannins and acidity typical of the Hautes-Côtes then come through, “crackling” in the mouth, demonstrating the remarkable cellaring potential of this wine endowed with character and lovely freshness.
