Story

Story

When Vittorio Frescobaldi – in the early Nineties – met Robert Mondavi, he gave life to a new chapter in the history of great Tuscan wines with the vision of creating a distinctive and unprecedented wine in Montalcino. From that meeting, 25 years ago, Luce was born, a wine inspired by the desire to make a dream come true: creating in Montalcino, a region with a special vocation for wine, a product that would go beyond the borders of tradition, but without denying it, treasuring the experiences of two historic wine families. Tenuta Luce is owned by the Frescobaldi Family, and managed by Lamberto Frescobaldi (President), being now distributed onto the Bordeaux system.

Luce is the symbolic wine of the Estate, a tribute to the golden and radiant sun that every day gives us warmth, energy and life. A light, a vision, a soul made up of two elements: Sangiovese and Merlot, elegance and envelopment, galestro and clay, the tradition of Montalcino and the personal interpretation of this land.

Luce’s standout label was inspired by the icon on the main Altar of the church of Santo Spirito in Florence, Tuscany. The Santo Spirito church was built on a land donated by the Frescobaldi family in the 15 th century.

Vintage 2017
In 2017, a crisp spring was followed by a warm, sunny and dry summer with bright cloudless skies. The clayey soils of the Merlot vineyards provided the plants with adequate water reserves, which helped reduce any heat-related stresses. Rain showers in mid-September supported a perfect ripening of the grapes.

GRAPE VARIETIES: Sangiovese, Merlot

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

The wine displays an intense, almost impenetrable, ruby red color. On the nose, the wine introduces itself with intense red fruits and subtle hints of incense and spicy notes that bequeath extraordinary complexity. In the mouth, the bouquet’s complexity comes alive through elegant tannins that gift the wine with unique balance and structure.

James Suckling – 97 points

26 Jun, 2020 – Dark-berry, walnut, cedar and violet aromas with just a hint of chocolate. Full-bodied, layered and rich with ripe tannins and a vivid finish. Shows energy and a velvety texture. Deep and long. Give it two or three years to soften. Try after 2022.

Decanter – 95 points

March 19th 2020 was the 25th anniversary of Luce, a relatively young project founded by the Mondavi and Frescobaldi families in Montalcino. Despite the obvious cancellation of the event, the 2017 vintage celebrates this birthday properly. Luce is one of the few Super Tuscans of Montalcino. Compared to Brunello it is blended with Merlot adding suppleness and focused on new oak ageing. Deep crimson in colour, full of clove, vanilla and buttery aromas, than brights for black cherry and plummy notes, graphite and cherry flavour, with an earthy mineral finish. Grainy velvety tannins (impressive for 2017 vintage) and firm acidity are well supported by incredibly rich fruit concentration and suppleness. A wine drinkable now with potential for ageing.
