Story

Story

When Vittorio Frescobaldi – in the early Nineties – met Robert Mondavi, he gave life to a new chapter in the history of great Tuscan wines with the vision of creating a distinctive and unprecedented wine in Montalcino. From that meeting, 25 years ago, Luce was born, a wine inspired by the desire to make a dream come true: creating in Montalcino, a region with a special vocation for wine, a product that would go beyond the borders of tradition, but without denying it, treasuring the experiences of two historic wine families. Tenuta Luce is owned by the Frescobaldi Family, and managed by Lamberto Frescobaldi (President), being now distributed onto the Bordeaux system.

Luce is the symbolic wine of the Estate, a tribute to the golden and radiant sun that every day gives us warmth, energy and life. A light, a vision, a soul made up of two elements: Sangiovese and Merlot, elegance and envelopment, galestro and clay, the tradition of Montalcino and the personal interpretation of this land.

Luce’s standout label was inspired by the icon on the main Altar of the church of Santo Spirito in Florence, Tuscany. The Santo Spirito church was built on a land donated by the Frescobaldi family in the 15 th century.

Vintage 2018
The early rains in 2018 replenished the water reserves that were under duress in 2017. This allowed the grapevines a swift and uniform budding phase, which was further supported by the mild spring temperatures. Summer was characterised by a dry climate without excessive temperatures; ideal conditions to maintain an excellent vegetative-productive balance and to ensure the perfect growth of the grapes. In September, the northern winds and sunny days
greatly contributed to completing the ripening process of the grapes in the best possible way.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Luce 2018 has a dark ruby red color. The nose is a prelude of aromas of black fruits, blackberries and violets, with marzipan and black pepper that further enrich the bouquet. In the mouth, the wine is soft and voluminous, balanced by a solid tannic structure, before closing with a persistent crisp finish.

James Suckling – 97-98 points

10 Sep, 2019 – A dense and wonderfully layered Luce with a solid center palate and ever so polished tannins. So long and beautiful. Full body. Flavorful and impressive. One of the best I have tasted.

Decanter – 93 points

The 26th vintage of Luce saw a return to ‘normal’ conditions following the drought season that was 2017. ‘We had a winter with snow, a spring with warmth and rain, we had a proper summer where we had the sun and also some rain, and a terrific fall where we were able to stretch our harvest,’ says Lamberto Frescobaldi. This blend of Sangiovese and Merlot has a rich nose full of plump, ripe dark fruits, subtle dark chocolate, violets, and a minty-fresh edge. It’s silky-smooth and very ripe, yet the sweetness of dark berry fruits is countered by saline acidity which also hides the 15% alcohol well. Streaks of roast coffee beans, dark chocolate and charred oak wash through the palate, the tannins super-fine and well integrated. The finish is long, with touches of liquorice and black cherry. Very drinkable now, but worth keeping for another couple of years at least before opening.
