Story

Story

When Vittorio Frescobaldi – in the early Nineties – met Robert Mondavi, he gave life to a new chapter in the history of great Tuscan wines with the vision of creating a distinctive and unprecedented wine in Montalcino. From that meeting, 25 years ago, Luce was born, a wine inspired by the desire to make a dream come true: creating in Montalcino, a region with a special vocation for wine, a product that would go beyond the borders of tradition, but without denying it, treasuring the experiences of two historic wine families. Tenuta Luce is owned by the Frescobaldi Family, and managed by Lamberto Frescobaldi (President), being now distributed onto the Bordeaux system.

Luce Brunello was born as a tribute to the land of Montalcino and its winemaking traditions. The Sangiovese grapes from the Madonnino vineyard, ideally suited for exposure and soil composition, can fully express Brunello’s perfect combination of structure and elegance and its powerful and captivating style.

Vintage 2016
The 2016 growing season started off mild with average rainfall. In the spring, rains were abundant and well distributed, which supported an earlier budding phase that began at the beginning of April. A hot summer followed, which was, however, free of excessive daytime temperatures and was characterised by beneficial rain showers throughout the month of August, helping the plants to avoid water-related stress. September was very sunny with a
noteworthy range in temperature variation that facilitated a rich concentration of aromas and polyphenols within the grapes.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Ruby red in colour, on the nose the wine soon reveals its elegance and complexity with aromas of cherry liqueur, violet and tertiary notes of tobacco, black olives and undergrowth. On the palate, the wine is compact and creamy, supported by bright acidity with well-defined and rounded tannins that give the wine a persistent finish.

James Suckling – 98 points

30 Oct, 2020 – Ripe, decadent aromas of blackberries, black truffles and black cherries with hints of violets. Dark, wet earth, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of beautiful, pure fruit and creamy, round and fine tannins. Tight and reserved, but showing wonderful potential. Try after 2025.

Decanter – 92 points

Luce delle Vite was established in 1995 as a collaboration between Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Mondavi, but is now fully owned by Frescobaldi. From 11 hectares of south- to southwest-facing vineyards at 400 metres above sea level, Luce is a ripe and extroverted Brunello. Initial chocolate and cocoa notes are appealingly nuanced by smoke, tar and dry, dusty earth. The palate proposes cherry and plum cake, with sweet spice on the finish. Vivid acidity lifts the whole, while supple chalky tannins add extra drama.

Drinking Window 2023 – 2034

Wine Enthusiast – 92 points

The shy nose eventually reveals balsamic aromas of menthol and cedar that mingle with underbrush, leather and baked plum. The full-bodied palate recalls cherries marinated in spirits, licorice, vanilla and grilled porcini while assertive, close-grained tannins clench the finish.
