Story

Story

Bolgheri is the only Tuscan Appellation located on the coastline, and home of the ‘Super-Tuscans’. Its Terroir is perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (unlike most of Tuscany, planting Sangiovese). The Bolgheri DOC appellation was founded in 1994 and its wines have gained famed and recognition ever since.

Sensing the incredible potential of this region, Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori. The property is adjacent to Tenuta San Guido, producer of Sassicaia, which is considered the original “Super Tuscan”. Robert Mondavi took a minority interest in the estate in November 1999, and were full owners by 2002, while initiating a partnership with the Frescobaldi family. In April 2005, Frescobaldi bought the remaining half of the shares of Ornellaia, coming to own the whole estate. Axel Heinz is the current winemaker with renowned Bordeaux Consultant Oenologist Michel Rolland, involved with the estate since its beginning.

The desire to nurture the estate’s exceptional qualities has shaped Ornellaia’s philosophy since the beginning. Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot and the faithful expression of unique terroir developed in harmony with nature.

Vendemmia d’Artista celebrates the exclusive character of each Ornellaia vintage: Since the release of Ornellaia 2006, an internationally famous contemporary artist has created a work of art for the estate and a series of limited-edition labels, inspired by the character identified by the winemaker to describe the particular features of the new vintage. Sold and auctioned off to be delivered to the cellars of the lucky collectors and, from 2019, the proceeds are donated to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in support of an innovative project called “Mind’s Eye”.
Since 2012, the Vendemmia d’Artista project has been extended to each case of Ornellaia (containing six 750 ml bottles) in which one bottle out of six has a special label designed by the artist. These unique labels will be reserved for purchases of full cases and not available by the unit.

Artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg were invited to interpret the character of the 2019 vintage for the Vendemmia d’Artista project. In addition to creating a site-specific work, they styled a series of large-format bottles with their art. Furthermore, for the Bordeaux bottle, the artists designed a limited-edition label alongside the traditional label. One “Il Vigore” artistic label can be found in every case containing six 750ml bottles of Ornellaia 2019.

THE CLIMATE OF 2019
More than most vintages, 2019 was characterized by a highly variable climate, which alternated periods of cold and rain with long bouts of drought and heat. After a normal winter, the budding took place in the first week of April. The cold and rainy conditions throughout April and May significantly slowed down the vegetative vine growth, leading to a 10-day delay in flowering compared to the average. Very hot, rainless weather suddenly arrived in June, reaching temperature peaks of 37°C at the end of the month. The weather stayed warm and sunny throughout the summer with temperatures 2°C above average and 45 consecutive days without rain. The long dry period was interrupted by two days of rain in the last week of July, bringing the temperature back to the seasonal norm, with ideal conditions for ripening. The harvest began slowly on 5 th September. As usual, the last week of September saw a lowering of temperatures which made it possible to preserve a great finesse and aromatic freshness. Sunny conditions returned after another rainy event on 21st September, which allowed us to conclude the harvest of the later ripening varieties on 4th October.

VINIFICATION AND AGEING
The clusters were hand-picked into 15 kg crates and then selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and then softly crushed. In 2016, optical sorting has been introduced in addition to manual selection, in order to further increase the quality of selection. Each grape variety and single vineyard block were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at temperatures between 26 and
30°C for one week, followed by maceration for about 15 days, for a total time in the vat of about three weeks.
The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barrels, 70% new and 30% used once. The wine then remained in barriques, in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellars for about 18 months. After the first 12 months of maturation, the wine was assembled and then returned to the barriques for an additional 6 months. After bottling, the wine aged a further 12 months prior to release.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

“With an intense ruby-red colour, Ornellaia 2019 has a bouquet full of intriguing spicy and balsamic notes, including aromas of black pepper, sage and aromatic herbs. The wine is both full-bodied and vibrant in the mouth, filling the palate with its dense and elegant tannic texture and ending with a persistent and beautifully crisp finish.”

The aromas of blackcurrants, fresh basil and thyme, as well as cedar and sandalwood are so attractive. It’s full-bodied and very linear with tight tannins that draw you down the length of this young wine. Wet-earth and cool-stone undertones. It’s solid and so structured. A classic Ornellaia for the cellar. Try after 2027

Decanter – 97 points

Ornellaia 2019 seems to be a return to the past: we must go back to the 2002 vintage to find a blend of Ornellaia with more than 60% of Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 2019 there is 62% of it to be precise, with 31% of Merlot, 4% of Petit Verdot and 3% of Cabernet Franc. It’s a throwback which I like – compared, for example, with the Merlot-based 2018, even if it compensates the slightly lower proportion of Cabernet Franc. ‘The vintage was delayed by a cool and rainy spring with flowering 10 days later than average, but the harvest finished one week earlier,’ said Axel Heinz, managing director of Ornellaia. Despite the shorter growing season, 2019 was a powerful vintage with a dry and warm summer 2°C higher than the average. Ornellaia’s team defined it as ‘Il Vigore’, which refers to its strength. Restrained bramble fruits are enhanced by earthy tones, walnut husk and Mediterranean herbs, with a whiff of dry mushrooms and the first hint of balsamic notes. The attack is velvety with great mid-palate extraction. The tannins are very ripe and there’s a refreshing acidity, but what is to be underlined is the clear cut of this wine, its woven structure and the savoury energy on the finish, typical of the climate of Bolgheri.

Wine Advocate – 97 points

This is a beautiful expression of coastal Tuscany and the sunny Mediterranean. The Ornellaia 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia (a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot) pours from the bottle with a specific darkness that has elements of both inky saturation and ruby highlights. The wine is saturated and rich—this is something you notice off the bat—but it also reveals a pleasing lightness or grace that is transmitted to both the bouquet and the palate. Dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum mingle with more substantial aromas of spice, leather and sweetly cured tobacco. The tannins are beautifully managed, and the wine sports considerable heft and density on the palate that drives a very long and pleasurable mouthfeel.

Wine Enthusiast – 96 points

This deeply hued, elegant red has enticing aromas suggesting ripe blackberries, juniper berries, purple flower and sandalwood. Firmly structured and boasting class and finesse, the palate is still young and austere, offering black cherries, currants, black pepper and tobacco. Tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity keep balanced. Drink 2029–2039.
